Why does St. Paul's sell coffee?
Here are four reasons ...
- it is fantastic coffee
- a fair price is paid to the pickers and their families
- a fair price is paid to producers
- all sales help AIDs victims in Kenya
At St. Paul’s Castle Hill we love coffee! When we heard about the Fairtrade initiative and the benefits it brings to the people who grow and pick coffee, we were keen to use and sell Fairtrade coffee at our church!
We searched for a great-tasting Fairtrade blend of coffee and found a local roaster, Clayton Pine (Castle Hill), who developed the blend for us. We have called it Malacci's after our church coffee shop.
When we started buying the coffee from Clayton Pine at Pine Tea and Coffee (Castle Hill) we found that we could sell Malacci's coffee at reasonable retail price and make a $3.00 profit on every bag. So, we give that profit to our friends in need with HIV/AIDs in Kenya, through Beacon of Hope.

Why Fairtrade?
Most third-world world farmers live at the mercy of multi-national companies that only pay a low "take it or leave it" price due to a world over supply of coffee.
Fairtrade is an organisation that pays poor third-world farmers a guaranteed minimum price for their coffee. Farmers can then feed, clothe and educate their families. In addition, Fairtrade injects funds into these farming co-operatives to assist them in developing better farming practices.

Why Beacon of Hope?
Beacon of Hope is located in Kenya and helps families who are affected by the HIV/AIDS virus. At the moment our gifts to Beacon of Hope are used to develop a new site for their income-generating, health and education activities.
